As i understand it the changes are:

1) Support for ADSL2 which can make a big difference in speed if you are next to the exchange but get progressively closer to normal ADSL speeds the further you get away (i.e. somone like me might get an extre 10% increase)

2) changes to the backhaul arrangements from the local exchange to your ISP which could improve your service if your isp chooses to use some of the new options at their end.

Incidentally as far as i can tell your tatty copper line will connect to a single piece of equipment at the exchange which effectively combines the role of DSLAM (i.e. broadband) and ATA (analogue telephone adapter) so unless you have an LLU service there will be no more manual jumpering of services so broadband provision / re provision ought to be quicker.

I have checked my exchange stats and it gives two details.

21CN WBC status :Enabled as of 15/02/2009

21CN PSTN switchover target: Q3 2010

Does this mean my exchange is already up and running or is it not going to happend until 2010.

It is very confusing.

WBC is the internet as such, PSTN is your phone voice system, when it is changed your phone will go though a voice over ip system, it will all change that way. You should not notice the4 difference.

Your exchange have been enabled for the faster internet connection, but that is only if your ISP will support it.

Our exchange was converted at the end of last month and since I am with BT broadband they have put their customers on the system even if they are not using the higher speed. The problem now is that my speeds have gone down, not up, my SNR have gone up and reliability have gone down.

BT broadband are going to offer their customers the faster speed but we have to sign up for another 12 months to get it, well they have got a ghost in hells chance of me signing up.

I will see my contract out and see what is available nearer the time. Since one ISp is using the Cable and wireless network around here, I may look at that at £20 a month it looks pretty good, I will have to wait until the end of the year mind you.

So I guess as Zen has now changed it would seem only for Northern customers, I may one day get a change and then have to upgrade my router as well . I have not received one message and I would have liked one.

I just had a look on the Zen website and all their packages for the home is up to 20Mbits, of cause the speed depends if your exchange is updated, which yours is and how far away from the exchange you are. According to Zen checker I can get 2Mbits, I get more than that just about, so I presume they must use the BT checker as it always under estimate.

Not sure what you are on about with Nothern customers only?

As for the router, most routers these days will cope with the higher speed, my 4 year old Safecom will I know that.

what router have you got and what are you on about having another one, I did not think Zen gave out routers?

I have a 2wire 1800 HG which is very good , I think it is rather old so may not support 21CN, thanks for your help on this.

I think you are right, I had a look around the net and it seems there is a firmware upgrade, but it can be risky.

How far away are you from the exchange?

If you are a fair distance away fr0om the exchange then youmay be better off staying with the router you have as it would still connect you at the standard ADSL speeds.

ADSL2+ which is what this 21CN uses can make things worse for people with long cables.
I was getting over 3mbits until BT changed our exchange, now I just get over 2.5 if I am lucky.

Sam Knows say I am

You are approximately 1.98km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer! . Not sure if that is a long distance.

Well today is the big day, I am upgrading and a new router , Zen have been great in there info, I think the change will be dependent on when the router turns up as I know my current one does not support ADSL 21cn . I hope the new one's work, I think it could get my speed up 9mb from an average of say 5mb. Can anyone tell me what that means in english please

I think you'll notice the increase in upload speed more than the download unless you have a very good line and getting close to the 8mb on the old system, My exchange is set to enable 21cn at the end of this month. I'm also interested to what difference it makes

Well I have done the dead and replaced my router to one of these Netgear DG834N RangeMax. I think it takes 1 to 2 days to re synce. But it seems a bit quicker and the change over was so easy. I have done speed tests and so far nothing. I wonder when I will know.
